As seen in the Angelina Jolie movie "Maleficent". Beautiful authentic embroidered vintage Banjara cushion covers from India. These beautiful cushion covers have been meticulously made from colourful hand loomed cotton cloth with fine and intricate cotton cloth appliqué work and heavy embroidery and embroidered embellishments. The back side of the embroidery has been quilted with a running quilt stitch.
Originally these covers were used as bags for the men belonging to the Banjara tribal group. The Banjara people are famed for wearing their wealth. This is reflected by striking colourful clothes, accessories and spectacular jewellery. The women wear colorful and beautiful costumes with silver anklets, long silver earrings and patterned cowry shells in their plaited hair. All Banjara enbroidery features geometric, floral and motifs. The quality of the embroidery is of an exceptionally high quality. The original dyes are generally still bright and clear. These old cushions covers are exceptionally hard wearing as they were originally intended to be used daily for carrying possessions as part of their nomadic lifestyle in the arid Indian countryside.
A variety of materials – cotton, silver, brass, some gold, cowries, ivory, animal bone and even plastic – are used in the making of a Banjara wardrobe. The embroidery and style of textile making is unique to the Banjara people.
