We believe this historic ox-cart wheel from Northern India dates back to the end of c19th or early c20th.
Crafted from a tropical hardwood, this antique cartwheel would have been manufactured in a small Indian village by the dedicated wheel carver. An unusual piece of travel history.
This solid spokeless-wheel is carved from extremely dense teak hardwood – obviously a pre-requisite for its long-term durability. Being extremely durable they were used for hundreds of years. In some remote areas, they can still be seen on carts pulled by an ox.
The cartwheel alone weighs around over 25kg.
The subtle aesthetic detail of this road-weathered ox-cart wheel shows a stunning grain patina which reflects the natural imperfections of wood. This has evolved over its long life as a working product. Today this wheel makes a great-looking statement piece for the home.
Scaramanga would recommend this as a decorative display piece - against a wall (see photo). Alternatively, why not use it outside on the lawn as a very cool and innovative re-purposed low-level seat.
Wheel size: Dia46cm x D20cm.
Scaramanga has a selection of these antique ox-cart wheels. Why not be bold and have a number of these rustic ox-cart wheels in the garden or around a low-level coffee table in the home.
