Each old wooden chest here at Scaramanga is unique, and this one in particular is no exception. With lots of hidden compartments, carved patterns and brass detailing, this beautiful antique Indian chest is full of character and is guaranteed to bring a distinctive charm to any home.
More than just looking good in the home, though, a vintage wooden chest is also a practical storage solution and one of the many attractions to wooden chests and boxes is their versatility. The possibilities for what you might use one for are endless, and again, this one in particular is no exception…
Here at Scaramanga we take particular interest in one of the more obscure and unusual holidays that you won’t find listed in your average pocket diary… International Talk Like A Pirate Day!
However, for carrying stuff is one thing, but the leather satchel only really came into the fashion limelight in the 17th century when it became a popular fashion accessory for the first time.
We never missed a chance to tell everyone and anyone of our excitement about Scaramanga’s trip to The Big Tent festival in Falkland for the weekend, so I’m sure no-one needs reminding that we were actually there… But this is the first opportunity I’ve had to sit down and actually write about how it went, what we did and what we saw…
In my last interview I set out to unveil some of the mystery surrounding online shopping from the viewpoint of the customer. This time, I thought I’d look at things from the other side: from our view here at the Scaramanga office. In the same way customers receive orders from apparently out of the blue, we spend our days in the office packing up chests, furniture and bags and sending them out into the world with no idea where or who they go to.
An old wooden chest can become a number of different things. It can be an addition to an extensive vintage collection, a one-off quirky piece in an otherwise modern home, or even a memory box which will be fondly filled with one’s most precious possessions. And a bag, well that can become the life-saver bag which makes carrying stuff around uni easy, the perfect fashion accessory you’ve been looking for that compliments every outfit, or the bag which goes travelling with you over summer and comes back with the well-worn look to prove it. But we never get to see any of this; we never get to see what each piece becomes to an individual and how it comes to be fitted it in with their personal style.
To this end, I set out to find an example of how a customer has taken our pieces and used them in their home. So we invited Herve Moreaux to tell us about what he’s bought from us, what he did with the furniture and to share some of his thoughts on interior design and style…
This summer, Scaramanga has become infatuated with a younger, hotter model of their classic satchel… Continued
Last Christmas Scaramanga trialled a limited edition range of bags: for the festive season, the classic favourite small and medium wide leather satchels were available with a small front pocket. They were an instant success. However, whilst the small satchel has been readily available with the front pocket ever since, until now the medium has not yet made an appearance this year. But yes, until now. Because with the arrival of our huge container of furniture, which we have been talking about for weeks, came the arrival of the new medium wide satchel with front pocket. Hundreds of them.
As I sit here in my newly furnished ‘study corner’ in my living room, I think I can safely say my first Auction Room experience has been a great success. It has also given me a new, fully affordable addiction – because after you’ve been once, you will definitely go back.
Since 2007, TV Presenter Alexa Chung has frequently appeared in the fashion press as a style icon, characterised by her distinctively quirky, vintage style. At the tail-end of last year, Alexa was seen carrying a Mulberry bag in the style of a leather satchel bag named after her. After months of jealousy from her fashion followers, has finally been released in stores at the beginning of 2010.
The bag is a leather messenger/leather satchel bag, not unlike Scaramanga’s own small or mini wide leather satchels. The Mulberry features a half-flap with belt strap and buckle fastenings, which also characterises the Scaramanga wide satchels.
