This is an good example of an old travel trunk which has a hanging rail, wooden hangers, lower document and briefcase. This is a fine example of luggage specially made for the rigours of rail, sea and road travel. The trunk's interior and exterior is in good condition with the original fittings and lining. There are very few marks or dents to the exterior of the trunk. The lock does not come with a key.
Today they make interesting and fascinating features around the home and can be used as a compact wardrobe for a guestroom or a childs bedroom. Their bold simple construction and their distressed look and feel mean they can be used in so many ways. The Oshkosh Trunk Company was established in 1902 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and exclusively made trunks until 1927 and made them so well they became one of the leading trunk makers in the USA.
In 1939 the company was sold to The Plotkin Brothers of Chicago and the name of the company was changed to Oshkosh Trunks and Luggage. The company continued to manufacture luggage until it went out of business in 1962.
The reason why Oshkosh trunks developed into a market leader can be seen today by the quality and condition of the Oshkosh trunks that are still available today. The workmanship and durability of the trunks has ensured that many of them still look attractive and almost as good as new.
By the way, even back in 1926 the company proclaimed in its own advertisements that ‘Oshkosh trunks are rather expensive’!
Note: Our old and antique wooden chests, travel trunks, coffers and boxes are not new or made to look old. They may have small marks and scratches on them, which are consistent with their age and original use. We feel these add to their character and appeal. Please look at the photos to get an idea of their condition. For more information see our ethical policy for wooden furniture and wooden accessories.
