Product Information for Antique Oak Silver Coffer

SOLD   Antique iron bound oak silver coffer made by Garrards of London, goldsmiths, jewellers and silversmiths to the Royal Family; circa 1880. This fantastic large solid dark oak chest has been constructed from wide thick high-quality oak and finished with wide iron bands. These grand oak chests were intended for the transport and storage of entire dinner services.  The oak chest has a pair of heavy iron handles at either end.

There are several splits in the top panel, these can be seen in the close up images. The do not affect the structure or stability of the chest.
 
The lid lifts to reveal a large compartment. It would have had removeable trays (no longer present) for storing family silver.
The makers name is engraved on the brass lock on the inside of the chest. Although the exterior of the chest is in very good condition, the interior shows signs of wear to the lining paper.
 
Our hardwood chests and trunks are unusual and each differs in size, style, finish and the number of compartments inside them.
This distinctive old chest would grace any hallway,  or majestic bedroom

Note: There is a small rectangluar area that shows a lighter shade. The owner's brass name plate would have originally need fitted here. The chest has a slightly domed / curved top. Our chests are not new or made to look old. They may have small marks and scratches on them, which are consistent with their age and original use. We feel these add to their character and appeal.
